The Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head Neck Surgery in Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata is one of the oldest ENT departments among the hospitals in eastern India. It was started as a separate department by Dr. Abirlal Mukherjee in 1977. Earlier, since the early nineteenth century, it functioned as a unit under the Department of General Surgery.
The ENT department is presently situated in the EZRA Hospital Building which was established as early as 1887. The department houses sixty beds including two sophisticated cabins, an upgraded ENT operation theatre, a minor operation theatre, an upgraded AVC room and an air-conditioned seminar room. It also boasts of a well-stocked departmental library with a separate library room where students and faculty alike can make use of recent and classical medical literature.
The department is presently headed by Prof. (Dr.) S P Bera. Participation in various conferences and workshops, publications in different journals and extending community services like school health services and “Jana Swasthya Melas” have reached its zenith under the patronage of the Head of the Department.
The department has set a trend in microsurgical operations of the ear, nose, throat, head and neck and related fields. It has trained a number of ENT specialists currently practising in India and abroad and also perpetuating the expertise by teaching new students.
The department has conducted various workshops over the last few years which has helped surgeons in this part of India to gain valuable exposure to the modern concepts of ENT and head neck surgery.
